Berkeley Seminars on Foucault’s Parrhesia: Truth-Telling and Gender Identity

Today, parrhesia is exemplified in gender performativity. Gender stereotypes are enforced through power relations, as seen in figures like Andrew Tate, who adheres to masculine expressive channels. Similarly, Barbie’s subjectivity is shaped by both femininity and patriarchy. Trans individuals engage in Parrhesiastic self-discovery, forging gender identities beyond the cisgender binary, challenging societal norms through a new discourse of gender and power.
