Foucault in Eastern Europe: Readings and Reception

The European University Viadrina is located in Frankfurt an der Oder, at the banks of the river Oder on the German-Polish border, and it was re-opened in 1992 with the purpose of building bridges towards the East of Europe. In this panel we aim to discuss the reception of Foucault’s work in Central and Eastern Europe. This will include from a reassessment of Foucault’s years in Warsaw up to the particular readings, discussions and usages that his work provoked in the Eastern European countries on the light of their specific political, cultural and intellectual history: What are the specific features of this reception? How was it conditioned by the historical political context and how did the Foucaultian toolbox contribute to think about it? What approaches and concepts attracted the most attention and what future research perspectives are open by Foucault’s writing there? In the first part, members of the Viadrina Faculty of Social and Cultural Studies will present their own usages of Foucault’s work in research and teaching. In the second part, invited guests from or working in and on Eastern European countries will deliver a statement and discuss with each other, with Faculty members, and with students.
